Democracy Day: Shagaya charges youths, call for more female inclusion in leadership

                      Salman Shagaya

Chairman Salman Shagaya Foundation has called for women inclusion and improved youths' engagement in leadership as a recipe for growth and development in Nigeria.

"It has been twenty-one long years of democracy.  We have come quite a long way with so many ups and downs. It is instructive to note that in spite of the differences, our unity and togetherness in diversity is Nigeria's greatest strength-- a country's heartbeat is the people, and Nigeria is blessed with more than two hundred million of such, "   reads a statement signed by Ibraheem Abdullateef, Press secretary Salman Shagaya Foundation dated June 12, 2020

"For better democratic dividends, our electoral process needs an upgrade. As blessed as a nation, it is widely believed that the country would have been better with more capable leaders. Although people votes in democracy, the electoral processes determine the quality of the chosen. Let's reflect on it toward making the people's voice count.

"While the late Chief Kashimawo Abiola is the face of Nigeria's nascent democracy, we should never forget the support of his woman, Hajia Kudirat. She epitomised the loyalty and diligence of the Nigerian and African women in the face of travails. That is another strong reason our women deserve a better ratio in the leadership positioning in the Nigeria of today. Nigerian women have long been heroines. We should accord them a priority as a society and never undermine their safety, and also maximise their potentials if we desire a freer, better and prosperous nation, " he noted.

Shagaya also advocated for trust in the leadership capabilities of Nigerian youths and call for more inclusion.

"Among other things, we need to do more as regards youth engagement and development. As a country, Nigerian needs to promote more youth-focused policies, provide an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, and also encourage youths participation in politics. I have often maintained that if Nigeria's democracy was a house, our fathers were the architects. It is high time Nigerian youths became the builders taking it to completion. Only the blood of the heroes' past and the sweat of the present warriors can build a tower of true Nigerian democracy. So, I charge fellow Nigerian youths to rise and stake a claim for purposeful leadership."

Shagaya noted further that the youths should shun vices and pursue legitimate sources of income. He enjoins persistence, hard work, and dedication to developmental goals. While advocating for support for one another, the 40-year-old philanthropist assured that his foundation remains true to helping the vulnerable, caring for the girl child and the youths in Kwara state.
