Democracy Day: Sustaining our Democracy Requires Collective Efforts -Sen Oloriegbe

The chairman Senate Committee on Health and the Senator representing Kwara Central at the National Assembly, Dr. Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe has expressed that the sustainability of democracy in Nigeria requires collective efforts from the leaders and the led.

Oloriegbe stated this in commemoration of this year "Democracy Day" which is the second edition since the date was changed to "June 12th" to honor the struggle that produced the adjudged most free and fair election in the history of the country. The election result which produced Late Chief M.K.O Abiola as the elected president was annulled by the then military administration under the headship of Gen. Ibrahim Babangida and this led to distress across the nation in demand for fairness.

According to Oloriegbe: "The historical event that characterized the June 12th, 1993 election gave us reason to celebrate today. The significance of this celebration symbolizes unity in diversity and resilience typical of the good people of this country.

"While congratulating us on this auspicious day marking the celebration of the system of government that gives room for citizen participation and enthronement of rules of law, I want us to remember that sustaining the momentum requires collective efforts of the leaders and the led.

"We must ensure we continue to advocate for fairness, justice, equity, and peace. The absence of these will no doubt throw our society into anarchy, a situation which is anathema to the survival of democracy."
