EDO 2020: Embattled Obaseki May contest under PDP

There are indications that the incumbent governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki may contest the next governorship election under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as unconfirmed report claimed that the governor may collect the membership card of the party.

Also, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expressed its plans to woo the governor to its party, as its flag bearer in the forthcoming gubernatorial election.

It was gathered that the governor is moving into the PDP with all the 18 Local Government Chairmen in Edo State together with 12 lawmakers in the State Assembly.

A source disclosed that the governor may play host to PDP governors soon.

It was gathered that PDP had, in principle, reserved its governorship ticket for Obaseki, but it is not clear yet if the June 19 PDP primary will be a walk-over for him.

A source hinted that Obaseki would need a waiver to run for the PDP ticket as a fresh member, “but this is not usually a problem if the party executives at state and national levels are on the same page.”

Meanwhile, the National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan in an interview, said the party is prepared to receive anybody who intends to join as the party is “open, transparent and just.”

He however warned that the party’s procedural principle for new members to join from the ward level cannot be compromised, saying “membership of a party is different from contesting for election.
