Ondo Medical Varsity Gets Accreditation For Nursing Science, Physiotherapy

National Universities Commission (NUC) has fully accredited Nursing Science and Physiotherapy programmes for the University of Medical Sciences, UNIMED, Ondo, Ondo State.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by Mr. Temitope Oluwatayo of the
Public Relations Department of the university, According to Daily Independent on Sunday.

According to the statement, the NUC, which has the statutory mandate to accredit academic programmes in all Nigerian Universities, visited the varsity in the last quarter of 2019 as the University had run the programmes for two academic sessions following the initial approval by the Commission.

Therefore, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, the Executive Secretary of NUC, in a letter addressed to the Governor of Ondo State and Visitor to the University, revealed that Nursing Science scored 80.5 percent while Physiotherapy got 81.9 percent during the accreditation exercise.

Commenting on the new accreditation, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi, the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, described the accreditation as another laudable milestone in the history of the university.

He emphasized that the University was not simply interested in obtaining accreditation of programmes but focused on provision of excellent medical education that could be rated among the best in the world.

Prof. Fatusi appreciated all members of staff in the accredited departments and the entire University community for imbibing the culture of teamwork as well as dedication to duty.

Besides, he appreciated the state governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, for his commitment and unflinching support to the university.

However, the vice chancellor disclosed that new medical courses would be introduced as soon as possible in tandem with the vision to providing education and training in all health-related services.

Currently, the university had secured accreditation for 13 out of 14 programmes being offered by the University.

The remaining course, Medical Laboratory Science, would mature for accreditation in November 2020, after two academic sessions must have been completed as required by the Commission.
