Adeyanju is the Personal Assistant/Media Aide to Senator Oyelola Ashiru, the
senator representing Kwara South Senatorial District. In a brief chat with our
correspondent, she highlighted the success of the senator as he marks 365 days
in office.
The 2019 general election which birthed
fresh breath that reshaped the Kwara State political landscape with the mantra
‘O To Ge’. This has served as a route for a new political dispensation in the
state, an avenue where the citizens showed the power that lies in their thumps by
voting the candidates of their choices.
Since the inception of the progressive
governments cum progressive legislators voted for to represent the State at the
9th National Assembly, evidently, the state has witnessed enormous
success in all areas and sections.
In the same light, the Kwara South
Senatorial district has also experienced a new wave of government through Senator
Oyelola Ashiru, the senator representing the district at the National Assembly.
The year 2020, is a wonderful and
auspicious year for Alhaja Aiysaltu, the childless widow who was deserted in
the remain of the house ravaged by fire for over ten years. The story of the
widow was quiet pitiful, hence, the urgent need for senator Ashiru to build a
2bedroom apartment, embellished with modern furniture to soothes the comfort of
the widow. The house warming was done on the first day of the year.
However, the story of the widow marked
the beginning of widows’ empowerment across the senatorial district, where ten
widows from each ward were randomly selected, recall that there are 83 wards in
the senatorial district. However, the beneficiaries were given twenty thousand
Naira (20) each. The widows, being part of the vulnerable people in the
society, the empowerment served as a means to assuage their pains and to start
up a petty trading that will yield into income for them.

In the area of human capacity
development, one hundred and thirty (130) women and youths of Oyun Local Government
were trained by the personnel from Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria
(FRIN) and empowered on agro forestry enterprise, the participants were trained
on businesses related to agro forestry and were thereafter given twenty five
thousand Naira(25,000) each to start small businesses on what they have been
trained on.

However, following the need for the
country to diversify, to reshape the economy by improving the non-oil sector, which
agriculture falls into this category. Also for other Local Government in Kwara
South Senatorial District to be beneficiary of the subsequent training on agro forestry.
This necessitated the building of Agro Forestry Training Hall, situated at
Ijagbo town, in Oyun Local Government Area
In the same vein, Senator Ashiru
sponsored seven (7) youths across the seven Local Government that made up the
senatorial district, the youths were trained on Micro Flush: turning waste to
wealth. This training is the first of its kind in Nigeria; at the end of the
training the participants were certified to be a trainer in the subsequent
training in Nigeria. The training also avail the trainees the processes on how
to use toilet waste into manure.
As an act to revamp the ‘street boys’
and to transform them into responsible citizens. These set of people were
engaged with shops fully equipped to practice their learned skills. The
prominent among them is a newly opened cobbler shop at Awudere compound in Offa.

As regards the well being of the aged in
the senatorial district, before assuming office, the Senator inaugurated a
committee headed by Mr. Tajudeen Adeshina, saddled with the responsibility of
the elder’s welfares. Gentleman Abdulsalam Memorial Hospital is the designated
health facility that provides health care for the aged. So far, treatment of
various ailments, such as, bilateral hydronephrosis, herniorrhaphy and
appendectomy, which all required surgical operations has been recorded. ¾ of
the aged have enjoyed this health scheme designed for the aged, while all have
enjoyed the provision of food items. These elders have also seen this scheme
has an opportunity to relate with each other to conquer loneliness.
Psychologically,
the elders tends to be lonely, hence the need for communicating partners, it is
also perceived that the aged people are at the base of the society. Some are
often lonely, sick and without food. These findings required the senator to
open a secretariat for the elders, to meet every last Friday of the month to discuss
on diverse issues of interest. Also there has been timely provision of various
food items for them.
During the lockdown occasioned by the
ravaging COVID-19 pandemic, the senator has intervened to ameliorate the effect
of the lockdown by providing varieties of food items to the constituents. This
intervention cost Thirty million Naira (30,000,000) this social intervention
was done twice before and during Ramadan.

It is also of interest to know that, the
senator has facilitated more than 600 indigenes that will benefit from the
social intervention programme of the Federal Government set up to cushion the
effect of the lockdown on the vulnerable citizens. In the same vein, he has
also influenced the swift approval of the COVID-19 CBN support loan for
Household and for business of 48 indigenes that have applied.

As a man who cherish education, he
supported educational development programme, by giving 3 Law school students Three
Hundred Thousand Naira each (300,000) for their tuition fee.

Similarly, the senator ensured the
execution and completion of 2019 inherited projects in Kanmonu community and Gaa Jango community,
respectively. A block of 2 classrooms, with modern classrooms furniture were
built in each of the town.

After several years of power outage in
Kanmonu Alayin, the community was beautified with solar street light, Also some
streets in Offa town benefited from this beautification. Solar Street lights

It is important to state that, the
senator has facilitated five employments of constituents to the Federal
Polytechnic Offa. Also there are ministries and parastatals that the senator
has recommended his constituents for employment, this recommendation will be
considered soon.
It is also important to state that, the
constituents across the senatorial district have enjoyed his philanthropist
gestures immensely. Ranging from tuition fee, health related issues, religion
organisations, forums and cooperate organisations.
In a bid to project Kwara South
Senatorial District through tourism, the senator embarked on a salesmanship
trip to visit all the tourist sites in the district, in furtherance to this,
the senator also sponsored more than 200 youths, researchers and prospective
private investors to explore the tourist centres domicile in the district.
Thereafter, there have been reports of VIPs visit to some tourist centres in
the senatorial district.
As a means of getting closer to his
people, the senator appointed thirty four (34) Legislative Liaison Officers
(LLO). The LLO were selected from each district in the senatorial district.
This is first of its kind in the senatorial district.
Senator Oyelola Ashiru has also performed
well in his legislative duties; he has sponsored Bills, Motions and co-sponsored
motions that have positive effect in Kwara south senatorial district. Of note are
the bill for the establishment of University of History, Archaeology and Education.
Also, motion on The Need for the Central Bank of Nigeria to Regulate the
Activities of Cooperatives and Thrift Society of Nigeria
In addition, Senator Ashiru has
represented the Nigerian Senate at the 13th Abuja Housing Show, and
at the commemoration of the 2019 World Habitat Day and World Cities Day.

In the coming months, the constituency
is set to experience great infrastructural developmental projects and this will
cut across the senatorial district.
The senator has facilitated Federal
Government Ecological intervention, to open up the road from Oro-Ago to Owa-Kajola
where Owu Fall is sited. On approval, this will enable prospective tourists to
access the tourist centre with ease.
Also, there will be beautification and
up-scaling of Owu Fall in Ifelodun Local Government and Eromola Water fall
located at Idofin- Igbana in Oke-Ero Local Government, respectively.
In addition, there will be training and
empowerment of youths, also a start up grant for women and youths in the
senatorial district.
In a nutshell, the coming months is more
promising and enticing, it will be centred more on infrastructural development,
youths development and women empowerment.
