Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of death from chronic communicable diseases worldwide; every year, 10.0 million people develop TB and 1.6 million people die from the disease. TB is listed as a major health challenge.
In view of this, the administration of Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq partnered with Sustaing Health Outcomes Through the Private Sector(SHOPS PLUS) in training private health practitioners in the state.
While speaking during the training, the Honourable Commissioner for Health Dr Raji Razaq who was represented by the state program manager for State Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Dr Muhammed Oyeniyi Rasheed said the training course is for Public Private Mix(PPM) which includes Private Hospitals, Clinics, Community Pharmacies, Patent Medicine Vendors and Private Laboratories in Kwara State.
"Research has shown that 60% of the health care delivery is by private health sector in Nigeria and Kwara State Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Program has been able to notify between 800 - 1000 people every year with over 2500 missing cases. That means the significant gap lies in private facilities" said Dr Muhammed.
The team lead who is the technical director of the USAID/SHOPS plus Tuberculosis Program, Dr Bolanle Olusola-Faleye applauded the state government for her supportive roles towards the Program.
Dr Olusola-Faleye said the training is all about engaging Private Health Providers, traditional leaders and people of the community by involving them in TB service delivery to increase TB case notification and treatment in Kwara State; the first phase of the training will cover 9 LGAs in the state.
Dr Olusola-Faleye said the training is to build the capacity of the private health providers to screen, diagnose and treat TB cases.
While speaking further, Dr Olusola- Faleye said TB can be cured by administring effective treatment but all that is needed for the people with symptoms is to present themselves to the health facilities.

Practitioners of Nigeria, Kwara State Chapter, Dr Joseph Adeyemo appreciated the organizers of the training and said as a private healthcare service provider tuberculosis training is what the patient medicine Vendor should know about so that they will be able to identify clients with symptoms of TB and refer them to the health facility.
