Nigerian Youth Congress Kwara State branch on Monday has called for palliative support for private school teachers in the state, stating that the concerned persons are battling hunger, depression, alongside the virus due to lack of salaries since March.

 The youth body called on the Kwara State Government, non-governmental organizations, private Individuals, and other stakeholders to come to their aid in order to avoid breakdown of order and loss of lives as the suffering persists. 

This was after a meeting of the NYC executives with the other stakeholders in Ilorin.

 "The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has wrung a nasty economic effect on everyone's businesses, but the plight of the private school teachers is most pathetic. Most of them have been without salaries since March. Hence, supporting the private school teachers at this period is of utmost importance," Issa Mutolib Ayobami, the NYC state chairman stated.

"The inability of the school owners to secure the salary welfarism of their employees is understandable. Unfortunately, at this unusual time, the axe has fallen deepest on the teachers whose sacrifice and commitment to ensuring our kids effectively learn is enormous. It is about time the society repay their good deeds in kind and cash.

"As bad as the time is economically, public school teachers and other public and civil servants are not as adversely affected. The government, in light of its duties to care for all with or without emergency, should save the private school teachers from the abyss. They can institute a welfare package to cushion the effect.

"Also, non-governmental organisations, well-heeled individuals and other stakeholders are enjoined to support the government's efforts in stemming the pang of hunger in the land as capable."

Issa stated that NYC is ready to partner and assist the government, NGOs and other individuals who are interested in providing succour to private school teachers in areas of implementation, distribution, and disbursement.

"The ultimate goal is to make life easier and better for the vulnerable teachers," he concluded.

NYC is under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development and has branches across the nation with a responsibility to drive youths capacity building and leadership reorientation.
