Tourism: After years of Total Neglect, Owu Falls to get KWSG's attention

After many years of total neglect by successive administrations, the Kwara State Government has promised on Thursday that one of Africa’s most spectacular and West Africa’s highest waterfalls, Owu Falls will receive the desired attention to transform it into a key attraction and revenue earner in the tourism sector.

This was made known in Ilorin by the Commissioner for Communications, Mrs Adenike Harriet Afolabi-Oshatimehin when she received a delegation of leaders of Owa Onire, the host community, who were on a courtesy visit to her office.

Located in Owa Onire, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, Owu Waterfalls stands 120m above the water level and cascades 330 feet down an escarpment with rocky out crops to a pool of ice-cold water below.

The Commissioner assured the community leaders that Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has the passion and commitment to turn Kwara State into the preferred destination for tourists.

According to her, AbdulRazaq remains committed to the delivery of projects and infrastructure that will encourage discerning investors to come to Kwara State and invest in the tourism sector.

Afolabi-Oshatimehin reassured the visitors that the government will ensure even development at the grassroots across the three Senatorial Districts of the State especially in the crucial areas of road construction and reconstruction.

“Rural roads across Kwara State will receive adequate attention including the road leading to Owu Waterfalls which is one of the prominent tourism sites in the State,” she assured.

While expressing appreciation to the community leaders for their people’s support and trust in the government, she said the government will pay necessary attention to their community.

One of the visiting community leaders, Alhaji Kazeem Jimoh told the Commissioner that the visit was aimed at appealing for urgent actions that will attract the world’s attention to Owu Waterfalls and its prospects as revenue earner.

He pleaded for attention to the seven-kilometre road from Owa Onire community to the waterfalls for ease of access.

“We are pleading with the government to intervene in order to boost social activities in the area,” he concluded.

Also in attendance were the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communications, Alhaja  Rabiat Mopelola Abdulrahman and other top government officials.
